The Cast with their 'Look Back in Anger' Scripts
The Lichfield Garrick Rep Company is busy rehearsing two very different plays - Look Back in Anger and A Midsummer Night's Dream - for their next offering to Garrick audiences this autumn.
The Director, Adam Barnard, who has taken up the challenge of presenting two ‘chalk and cheese' plays took time out of rehearsals to tell us how it's going.
Adam said: "We're all working really hard to create two shows that will transport audiences to both the fantastical world of heartbroken teenagers, rock ‘n' roll wannabes and a bunch of the coolest fairies who've taken style tips from The Fonze, and the bed-sit of a young married couple struggling to make sense of themselves in a confusing post 2nd World War period. So, it's quite a shift in emphasis, but we're confident both plays will appeal to audiences who want to experience vibrant drama right up close. It's been great be able to rehearse in the space the plays will be performed and we're delighted to be in Lichfield as it's such a beautiful city."
Look Back in Anger - by John Osborne

Directed by Adam Barnard, this intense and fascinating play is about young love and youthful rebellion in 1950s Britain
1956. Jimmy Porter is young, working class, educated and lost. In an attic bedsit in a Midlands town, on a damp, miserable Sunday, he sits with his new wife Alison and best mate Cliff and tries to make sense of a changing world.
Alison, unlike Jimmy, comes from a moneyed background. Cliff, unlike Jimmy, doe not let life's injustices rattle him. They get along despite their differences - but when elegant, unashamedly posh actress Helena turns up, four young lives will change forever.
Look Back in Anger changed the face of British theatre when it premiered at London's Royal Court fifty years ago. It was a new sort of play, worlds apart from the elaborate drawing rooms and farcical storylines of the time. The play, for which the phrase "Angry Young Man" was coined, offered a new and honest drama of real life and ordinary people.
Now, back home in the Midlands, a new generation can discover this passionate and funny story of young love in post-war Britain.

Continuing Lichfield Garrick's season on 1950s youth, we are delighted to offer this stylish spin on a classic Shakespeare comedy. Four highly energetic performers lead you through a whirlwind of young love, magical creatures and the shambling rock 'n' roll styling of Bully Bottom and the Rude Mechanicals.
Adam Barnard's adaptation, which has delighted audiences both young and old in London, is exclusively remounted for its first regional production here at the Garrick.
