Cows Moove On!

Chasewater Country Park bids a fond farewell to its bovine friends who've been helping to preserve the valuable heathland habitat.
Lichfield District Council's Countryside team has returned the three Dexter cattle to a local farmer, who kindly loaned the cows to the Council over the summer.
The three cows were placed on a specially fenced area of the Country Park in a pilot scheme to see if they could help us with our heathland management of the site. They do this by grazing on the heathland, which if left to its own devices would revert back to woodland.

The cows worked hard grazing for four months, eating choice vegetation such as grasses, the tips of bilberries and birch seedlings and branches.
Justine Lloyd, Countryside Officer, said: "We're really pleased with how well the cows settled into their new home and got down to the serious business of eating plenty of the lush vegetation. We'll miss them as they've been a gentle presence on Chasewater and have behaved perfectly."
Councillor Neil Roberts, Cabinet Member for Development Services, added: "We'd like to thank people who used the site this summer as everyone has been supportive of our pilot scheme. This helped our team a lot, and we're pleased to announce that we will be re-introducing a new set of cows onto the site next summer."
