On Your Doorstep - Lichfield Heritage Weekend

Take your pick from lots of fascinating tours and events taking place in Lichfield District over a special heritage weekend this September...
How well do you know Lichfield? Discover something new at one of the many tours and special events taking place throughout the district from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd September.
The weekend celebrating our District's heritage kicks off with the 'Wedding by Cannaa' - a 20 minute play written and performed by members of Lichfield Mysteries. See it for free at Erasmus Darwin House at 4pm on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd September.
Another dramatic event will be taking place at the Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum. 'Out of the Shadows', a one act play written by David Titley, will be performed by Intimate Theatre on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd at 7pm and 8.30pm. Tickets cost £4.50.
Other highlights of the weekend include a number of free walking tours. The Heritage Trail Tour is a Green Badge guided tour of our city's fascinating past. Setting off at 2pm on Saturday 22nd, places are limited so booking is essential.
Another tour to choose from is of Doctor Milley's Hospital on Saturday 22nd from 10am to 4pm. The tour takes in the historic almshouse for women, on Beacon Street, with parts dating back to 1652. The tour is free and you don't need to book - just turn up and enjoy.
The Lichfield Cathedral is once again offering free tours throughout the whole weekend. Tours to choose from include 'Walk in the Footsteps of a Pilgrim - the life of St Chad', Treasures of the Cathedral, Silver Tour and Roof Tours. The tours are free but booking is essential.
On Saturday, you can visit Mavesyn Ridware and go on a free tour of the fascinating buildings which include the 14th Century timber framed gatehouse which leads onto the manor house. Tours go hourly from 2pm to 5pm.
Chasewater Railway's Heritage Centre is also offering special free tours on 22nd and 23rd September. The tours will be going every hour from 12 noon to 5pm.
Councillor David S Smith, Leader of Lichfield District Council, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for visitors and residents to find out more about the District's interesting and sometimes forgotten past. Even if you think you know Lichfield, come along to one of these events as you might discover something new."
