Saxon Hill Community School is a key learning centre & physical disability support service.
Saxon Hill School is a relatively small special school which caters for pupils and students between the ages of 2 to 19 years. All of our pupils have some degree of physical disability and associated medical, sensory, communication and learning difficulties. We are divided into three departments, First school, Middle school and Upper School.
Nursery & First School caters for pupils from Nursery age to the beginning of Key Stage 2. Work is centred around a physical/sensory approach in a multi-disciplinary environment Great emphasis is placed upon self help and nurturing in an enjoyable, fun and relaxed atmosphere.
Middle School works with children in Key Stages 2 and 3. When leaving First School, consideration is given as to how the individual needs of the pupils can be best met in this stage of their education. Approaches will include access to the National Curriculum at levels appropriate to their abilities, adapted and modified curriculum activities with specialised communication systems or a multi-sensory approach to meeting individual needs.
Upper School caters for pupils and students aged 14 to 19. Classes are arranged in a similar format to those in Middle School, but with specialist approaches based around the 14 to 19 curriculum with a range of opportunities available according to individual needs. Pupils may transfer to other education providers at any age if appropriate or to Further Education facilities between the ages of 16 to 19.
Working together in partnership is vitally important to ensure that the overall needs of the children are met effectively and that we play an appropriate role in supporting the whole family.
The school works closely with agencies such as Social Services and the Local health trusts. We have close links with many local Primary and High Schools as well as Further Education and Residential Colleges, that offer both inclusive support and further vocational and academic courses. We aim to secure an appropriate placement for all our pupils and students when they leave us. We have family support groups and hold regular meetings and activities. This provides the opportunity for families in similar circumstances to come together and discuss issues that are of importance to them offering mutual support.
We aim to provide every child with a stimulating, challenging, safe, stable and caring environment where pupil's academic, physical, moral, spiritual and cultural needs will be recognised and developed. The school is based on a multi-disciplinary team approach that integrates professionals from within the school community and those from outside agencies.
