Abbots Bromley

Published: 2nd April 2007 14:52
Where: Abbots Bromley
On: Grassy trails, gravel tracks and roads. 10 stiles.
How long: 5 miles, about 2 hours
Difficulty: moderate
Pubs: Crown Inn or Goats Head (both in Abbots Bromley)
Starting at: St. Nicholas's church in Abbots Bromley

1. From Church lane go R along B5014 and then L just before the Crown Inn up a steep road. At top of hill turn R along Swan Lane and at end turn r along path to the stile. Head diagonally L across the field to a gap in the hedge. Go through the gap and continue across the next field to the footbridge. After the footbridge keep following the faint grassy trail to stile opposite.

2. Bear slightly L across middle of field to stile. Carry on straight up next field, keeping hedge just to your L across series of stiles and fields until you get to a road. Head straight across the road, following the footpath sign and, just as track heads hard R, go straight on over concrete stile and then across the next field.

3. After another stile, follow the curve of the field to the R as far as metalled road. Go L here, following road and track to Parkside farm gate. Just before this gate go through gate on R and then L through a series of gates.

4. Continue across field, with hedge to L, before crossing funnel shaped section of the meadow to the hedge on the far side. Follow this hedge to a stile and the wood. Bear diagonally R through a band of trees to a pair of footbridges and stile. Leaving the wood behind, bear R and head for far RH corner of the field.

5. At road opposite Park Lodge turn L. Just after crossing Story Brook head L signed "Staffordshire Way". At far LH corner of field follow hedge round to the R and cross small copse with help of two stiles. Continue to follow fence to nearly the corner of Bagot Forest, before you come across a stile on your L. Go through the hedge. Follow another hedge to your R for about 200 yds and then go R, through gate.

6. Follow Staffordshire Way footpath sign through next field, keeping hedge just to your R. At far RH corner of field go through gap in fence and follow hedge to your L to gate at top of field. Carry on along track as far as metalled road. Go straight on to get back to the start, and the pub!!
