Bramley Apple Crumble
| Published: 3rd December 2007 16:16 |
A classic British winter dish, beautifully tart soft Bramley apples with a sweet crunchy topping. I used a little muesli or rolled oats to give extra crunch.
Serves: 6
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients
300g Plain flour, sieved
Pinch of salt
175g Unrefined brown sugar
200g Unsalted butter, cubed at room temperature
50g Muesli (or rolled oats)
For the filling
450g Bramley apples, peeled, cored and cut into 6ths
50g Unrefined brown sugar
½ tsp Ground cinnamon
¼ tsp Ground Nutmeg
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 180oC/Gas 4.
2. Place the flour and sugar in a large bowl and mix well. Taking a few cubes of butter at a time rub into the flour mixture. Keep rubbing until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir the muesli or rolled oats into the crumble mix.
2. Place the fruit in a large bowl and sprinkle over the sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Stir well being careful not to break up the fruit.
3. Butter a 24cm ovenproof dish. Spoon the fruit mixture into the bottom, then sprinkle the crumble mixture on top.
4. Bake in the oven for 40-45 minutes until the crumble is browned and the fruit mixture bubbling.
5. Serve with thick cream or custard.
Try adding Cranberries or Blueberries to the apple mix for a twist on the traditional.
