5th July - POLICE "DAY OUT WITH A DIFFERENCE"

Published: 27th June 2008 21:37

FAMILIES in Lichfield and Tamworth are invited to a "day out with a difference" - a tour of their local police station.

The two stations are playing host to the first in a series of special open days which are happening this summer at police stations across Trent Valley which also includes Chasetown, Uttoxeter and Burton.

A young visitor to last year's police station open days has fun trying
on police riot gear with a helping hand from neighbourhood police
officer, PC Sean Holland.

The open day at Lichfield police station in Frog Lane is on Saturday, 5 July starting at 11am and running until 4pm.

At Tamworth, families and individuals will be able to visit their police station in Spinning School Lane on Sunday, 6 July, between 11am and 4pm.

The police station open days will offer visitors a chance to have their fingerprints taken, tour the police cells, meet local community officers and pick up crime reduction advice.

Visitors will also be able to get into the driving seat of a police patrol car, try their hand at using a ‘walkie-talkie' radio and, hopefully, meet a police ‘drugs' dog.

Inspector Jon Staite, Commander of Lichfield Neighbourhood Policing Unit and Inspector Ian Coxhead Commander at Tamworth said: "The open days give local people a chance to see what goes on, day to day, at their neighbourhood police station."

"We are often asked if people can have a look around and this is a good opportunity for them to do that and meet their local neighbourhood officers," they added.

Youngsters will be able to sit in the driving seat of a police car and have their fingerprints taken as part of a tour of the police cells. However, officers promise to release them without charge!

Open days are also being staged at Chasetown Police Station in High Street, on Saturday 26 July; at Uttoxeter police station, Balance Street, on Saturday 2 August and at Burton police station in Horninglow Street, on Saturday 23 August between 11am and 4pm.
