Grant awarded for the Staffordshire Regiment Museum's Victoria Cross Event.

Published: 2nd July 2008 16:09

The Staffordshire Regiment Museum has been given a grant of £3,500 by "Awards for All" towards the costs of their summer special event centred around the Regiment's Victoria Cross winners. Entitled "Inspiring Bravery", the event, being held on the weekend of 12/13th July, will feature all eight of the Regiment's VC medals owned by the Museum. Thirteen VCs have so far been awarded to members of the Staffordshire Infantry Regiments (38th, 64th, 80th, 98th, South Staffordshire, North Staffordshire and The Staffordshire Regiments). "Normally these medals have to be kept securely in the bank and not on display so this is a very rare opportunity to see them.", said the Museum's Curator Erik Blakeley. "In addition, the grant from Awards for All means that entry to the event can now be free!"

As well as the medal display itself there will be timed tours of the Museum's replica trench system where the Birmingham Pals will be re-enacting the story of William Coltman VC, the highest decorated soldier ever to serve in the ranks of the British Army, who won his VC as a stretcher-bearer in the First World War. Visitors can also listen to a talk on the Victoria Cross and the Regiment, given by Mr. Robert Hope, author of several books on the Regiment.

"Inspiring Bravery" is open to the public on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July. Opening times are 10.30 to 4.30. The Museum is located on the A51 midway between Lichfield and Tamworth.

Pre-booking for the tours is recommended as places are limited. Tickets should be available on the day and access to the medal display should be available unless numbers make it necessary to give priority to holders of pre-booked tickets.
