Linda Wilson with her new textbook Further Education teachers across the UK will soon be looking for the secrets to successful teaching in a brand new textbook by Tamworth & Lichfield College employee Linda Wilson.
Linda, who is the college's HE director, had worked for many years as a specialist in teacher training before she was asked by a publisher, following a recommendation from the City & Guilds organisation, to review a new textbook. After receiving her work, they were so impressed with her knowledge that they asked her to write one of her own.
The new book, entitled 'Practical Teaching: a guide to PTLLS and CTLLS', was released just a couple of weeks ago, and is expected to become a mainstay of tuition for the lifetime of the current FE teaching standards.
Written as a user-friendly guide to the do's and don'ts of teaching practice, it has taken her a year to write - work carried out in her spare time and at weekends. "There have been many occasions during the writing when I have questioned why I ever agreed to do it," she said.
"But I was flattered to be asked and I have experienced a real sense of pride and achievement in what I have accomplished. I only hope it will help new teachers everywhere to get a firm grip on the essentials of teaching in a further education environment."
College Principal Ann Neville said, "We are very proud of Linda's achievement and since excellence in teaching and learning is at the heart of what we do, it is very fitting that the book is such a useful guide for new and existing teachers."
The book has been dedicated to the memory of Teresa Bury, who was a highly respected teaching and learning mentor at the college prior to her death from leukaemia last year.
Linda, who at 53 has two grown up sons, lives in Burntwood and also enjoys painting and drawing. "My teaching specialism has always been teacher training. Though I started at the college 24 years ago as a part time catering lecturer, it didn't take long for me to become involved in training issues, and I'm delighted to have been able to put my experience to good use in this book."
Linda is now hard at work on the second in the series of books she is planning. "I would never have thought I'd got a book in me! But though it's been hard work, I have definitely enjoyed the experience," she said.
