Channel five's The Property List reckons Stafford is a top place to live!
Stafford was celebrating last night after being named as one of the top five places to live in the UK on national television.
The town came in at number four on Channel 5's "The Property List" last night in a survey looking at the best vale for money places across Britain.
Borough Council Leader, Councillor Judith Dalgarno, said: "I felt so proud to hear people on national television say what a wonderful town we have. Although to those of us who live and work here it is something we have always known - Stafford really is a great place to be.
"But to have been placed in the top five was a real bonus and should make everyone who is involved with our town feel very proud."
Though Councillor Dalgarno added: "Actually I think this Borough is the best place to live and work in the country."
Makers of the show collaborated with the Borough Council following the hugely successful "Stafford Renewed" event in April where local residents and businesses got a glimpse of the half a billion pound regeneration of the town. And last night (Thursday) around one million people across the country got a look at the future of Stafford with the Channel 5 show featuring artists' impressions of the planned transformation.
The programme was looking at the top ten places in the UK where you could get more for your money. As well as house prices, the survey took into account standards of health and education as well as low crime rates. It also featured the council-run Ancient High House and Stafford Castle as an example of the town's rich heritage.
"The Property List" presenter, Ian Blandford, said: "With house prices 10% lower than the regional average what's not to like about Stafford. It's a great location and there seems to be something for everyone - history, new facilities and a very bright future."
One resident interviewed for the show said he had moved to Stafford because it has: "great transport links, health and leisure facilities, great countryside and great schools."
The town came ahead of places such as Denbigh in Wales and Chester-le-street in Durham in the ratings but behind St Ives and the eventual winner Milton Keynes.
Around 4000 people visited the three-day "Stafford Renewed" exhibition where plans, artists' impressions and interactive images of the future schemes came together for the first time under a giant marquee in Market Square. Hundreds of visitors gave feedback following the event and details from the research will be available soon. Anyone who missed the event can still take a look at the proposals via a link from the homepage of the Council's website at www.staffordbc.gov.uk.
