Teen Booze Ban in Stone
| Published: 25th January 2010 17:43 |
A group of licensees in Stone have banned a troublemaker from pubs in the town.
The move is a bid by retailers in the area to clamp down on abusive behaviour in their premises.
The scheme is supported by Stafford Borough Council along with Staffordshire Police and aimed at reducing alcohol-related crime. The licensees form part of the ‘Business Against Retail Crime Scheme' (BARCS) in Stone and work together to promote the town centre as a safe place for customers.
The scheme kicked off at the end of last year and warned people if they were banned from one they would not be allowed in any of the premises.
And this month (January) they have banned a 19 year old woman following an incident in a pub in which two people were attacked. The woman is currently on police bail. Members of the scheme will decide how long she should be banned for at a meeting this week.
Councillor Patrick Farrington, cabinet member for community at Stafford Borough Council, said: "It is a clear message to troublemakers. If your behaviour in one pub is unacceptable you could find yourself banned from all the licensed premises in Stone town centre.
"People in Stone want to be able to enjoy a night out safely and these licensees have come together to make sure they can."
Commander of Stone Neighbourhood Policing Unit (NPU) Inspector 3447 Carl Humphries, said: "This work is led by local licensees with close co-operation from the police and local authority. Licensees are able to make the decision on the length of the ban and with our assistance, circulate details of it to public houses taking part. The banning can take place before any court proceedings.
"Through Operation Safer Nights, officers are working with Stafford Borough Council to keep Stone safe for those who live, work and visit the area and enjoy the excellent recreational facilities the town has to offer
Any other retailers interested in joining BARCS, or who want further information on the scheme, should contact Claire Bradbury, BARCS Coordinator, on 01785 619227, or email cbradbury@staffordbc.gov.uk.
