Key Stage 3 Curriculum
|
Published: 1st March 2007 15:59 |
Vital elements "to remain in Key Stage 3 curriculum" Shakespeare and algebra are to remain in the Key Stage three curriculum, following a review, it has been announced.
Proposals made by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) will also see slavery in history, cookery and climate change in geography introduced among 11 to 14-year-olds.
The plans also hope to encourage the teaching of non-traditional languages, such as Arabic, Urdu and Mandarin.
But classical literature is to remain, as it is seen as one of the "vital elements" of British education, according to QCA.
"It's vital that teachers instill a love of literature in young people and engage them with the best-loved writers from our history," education secretary Alan Johnson said.
"Understanding how language works and being able to express oneself creatively and clearly is crucial in every walk of life."
