New parents lose 68 days of sleep a year

Published: 21st April 2007 11:50
Having a baby can lead to two months' worth of sleepless nights in the first year, according to a new study.

One in three of the 500 new parents surveyed by Tomy said they often lost an hour of sleep in a night.

When added up, this amounted to around 68 nights' sleep lost a year, the BBC reports.

And it's first-time parents that suffer sleepless nights the most, with just one per cent of new mums reporting that they are able to sleep through their baby crying.

However, 43 per cent of the female respondents said that they thought their partner or husband had no difficulty doing it.

"Being up with a screaming baby, several times in the night can be a very lonely experience, especially if you're not getting support," Joanne Gray of Tomy told BBC News.

A spokeswoman for the Royal College of Midwives added: "Sleep problems are more common for first-time parents. You have to get to know your baby and gain confidence."
