Ideas for Summer Holidays

Published: 18th July 2007 23:51
Keeping the children entertained this summer does not have to cost you a small fortune. There are plenty of ways you can save money and enjoy great days out for free.

  • There are lots of attractions that are free to enter. Museums are often free and most modern museums offer interactive and interesting child-friendly exhibitions. There are country parks, town parks, farms etc.  Check out the numerous local free things to do in the Family Zone.
  • Sport is a fantastic way to keep active and have fun. Sport does not have to mean running at the gym for hours on end. Take a ball to the park and have a kick around with the kids, or organise a rounder's match at your local park with other mums and kids in the area. You can also hold your own Sport Day in your back garden using footballs, skipping ropes and hula-hoops. Award small prizes for small children to keep them entertained. Remember the egg and spoon race at school? Make sport fun and it won't feel like exercise at all.

  • Exploring the countryside is free. Take a picnic, go camping, cycling, kite flying, tracing, orienteering, map reading or just walking. Give children a challenge such as finding certain wildlife or a type of tree to keep them interested. Take a camera as a reminder of the day. Don't worry if it is raining - just wrap up warm and take a waterproof jacket. Tramping about in the rain can be good fun.
  • Planning ahead will save you both time and money. Knowing where you are going, planning your meals out and using the money off coupons will save you a small fortune.
  • Use the money saving offers on attraction websites. You can save money on admission or there may be days for special offers. For example, you can save up to £25.00 on a family visit to Legoland or save £29.00 on a trip to Chessington World of Adventure. Drayton Manor offer discounts for off-peak entrance.
