A CALL A DAY - AN ARREST A FORTNIGHT!
|
Published: 28th July 2008 12:58 |
The crime-fighting charity, Crimestoppers, has launched a campaign to increase the number of people calling its anonymous telephone hotline - saying its results speak for itself.
This campaign coincides with Crimestoppers nationally celebrating its 20th anniversary - and has received its one millionth actionable call from the public.
Locally, Suffolk Crimestoppers was created a year ago, when Crimestoppers Eastern Region was broken up into county sections.
"We have spent the last year establishing Suffolk Crimestoppers and getting the board up and running. Now we are looking to develop what we are doing in Suffolk," said Suffolk chair, Joe Pattison.
"Our key aim this year is to build the awareness of Crimestoppers in Suffolk. There will be national publicity, linked to the 20th anniversary and one millionth call, but it important that local people realise that their calls make a real difference in the fight against crime in their county."
"On average we receive a call a day in Suffolk - and these result in an arrest a fortnight. The simple maths is that, if we could increase the number of calls to even two or three a day, then the information could lead to arrests every week."
Crimestoppers is unique. It is a charity that provides people with an anonymous way of giving information about crime, without them having to talk to the police. It also provides rewards to people, whose information results in someone being charged for an offence. "We do not ask who you are, where you live or your contact details - we only want the information you have. We pass the information on to the police to investigate and, in Suffolk, there is a great chance of it resulting in an arrest," explained Joe.
"The more calls we receive, the greater chance there is that criminals will be brought to justice and taken off our streets. If you have any information, simply call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. The call is free and we are ready to take your call, 24/7."CRIMESTOPPERS 0800 555 111
