Looloo cracks the Great South Run

Author: CHASE hospice care for children Published: 2nd December 2009 16:50
Looloo Mizzi, 46 from Portsmouth says she is not a runner but that didn't stop her from entering the Bupa Great South Run!

She finished in a respectable 1 hour 43 minutes, 14 seconds - raising over £600 so far for CHASE hospice care for children.

Looloo claims her training was hampered a little because of the acquisition of a new puppy called Flicka but she can be proud of her achievement, because she hasn't done any serious running since 2003.

One of her great friends Tina Aston, who works as an events fundraiser for the children's hospice charity, had a little boy called Matthew age 8½ who died at the CHASE children's hospice in 2002.

Looloo was there with Tina during the last week of his life and was so moved by the work that CHASE does, she decided to raise some money for the charity.

Looloo Mizzi before and after the Great South Run

Breaking out the running shoes after 6 years
Looloo took part in the Adidas Women's Challenge (then the Flora Light) in 2003 with Tina and another friend, at a "brisk walking pace with a bit of jogging in between".

Since then has not done any training or running having a very busy life as a pathologist at St Richards Hospital in Chichester.

She decided to break out the running shoes again after seeing a call for runners in the Great South Run on Facebook from her friend Tina.

Looloo launched into a new training programme and was ecstatic on Sunday, having completed the run in a great time.

Spurred on to help a great cause
looloo said it was good to have something to focus on when running and the thought that she was collecting money for CHASE spurred her on.

"When I spent that time at CHASE I realised, all the things we get stressed and worried about are really not very important."

"Going to CHASE was a real wake up call for me. It is a wonderful place and they do so much fantastic work for families."

Tina Aston said: "It was great to have Looloo on the CHASE Great South Run team which was 20-strong this year."

It's not too late to sponsor Looloo who has a Just Giving site for donations: www.justgiving.com/louisemizzi
CHASE supports families with children who are not expected to live beyond the age of 19 in their homes and communities throughout South West London, Surrey and Sussex and at the CHASE children's hospice at Guildford.

CHASE has to raise £4 million a year to maintain this vital service.
