Proposals to improve Gosforth's road network

Residents in and around the busy Gosforth area have been invited to help shape proposals for critical improvements to road junctions. In response to increased traffic demand, safety concerns, and the need to develop access to shops and services, Newcastle City Council have announced plans for changes to the Gosforth road network that may benefit the wider City region.

Three major junctions, where traffic demand outweighs capacity during peak hours, are the subject of a business case to central Government. The bid, worth over £10million, has been developed in partnership with Nexus, Tyne and Wear's public transport executive.

Plans for Gosforth High Street involve a range of measures to enhance pedestrian areas, improve cycle and bus lanes, and enable better traffic flow along the route. The Blue House roundabout and Haddricks Mill roundabouts currently restrict traffic movement in and out of the City during busy periods and are considered accident ‘hotspots'. Proposals for traffic signals and road alignments are being put forward to improve safety and create smoother, more consistent traffic flow.

Councillor Wendy Taylor, executive member for sustainability and transport, commented:

"Gosforth is a vital area of the City, with a vibrant community heart and critical road network. Road users and Gosforth residents stand to benefit from these improvements, and we are seeking constructive input during public consultation to ensure the proposals are fit-for-purpose."
