Public Consultation over Stadium Village

People in Sunderland have the chance to give their views on plans for an indoor ‘real snow and ice centre' as part of the Stadium Village complex in the Monkwearmouth area of the city.
A blueprint for the development of new sports and leisure facilities surrounding the Stadium of Light and Sunderland Aquatic Centre is now on public display. It follows recent news that there has already been strong interest from developers in building an indoor ski centre on Stadium Village. It could also house an ice rink, specialist sports shops, bars and restaurants and would be a first for the North East region.
The overall regeneration plan for Stadium Village also includes further state-of-the-art sports, health and leisure uses, offices, homes and a hotel. Prepared by Sunderland City Council and regeneration company Sunderland arc, the proposals can be viewed at exhibitions across the city and also online for the next six weeks (until Wednesday 22 December).
Once comments have been made the document will be formally adopted by the city council in order to provide guidance to developers on how the scheme should be developed over the next 15 years. Cllr Paul Watson, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said:
The proposed indoor snow and ice centre is a major development for the city and it is important that the public have the chance to give their views on the scheme."
A first draft of the framework went to public consultation earlier this year and received overwhelming support. The document has since been updated to include the indoor snow and ice centre proposal.
Simon Elliot, property development manager at Sunderland arc, said: "We have had a model produced to help envisage what it might look like and we will be manning the exhibitions at various times during the consultation, where we will be more than happy to answer any queries or questions people may have."
This model will be on display at the Aquatic Centre on just three days in the period.
Once approved, the development framework will play an important part in determining future planning applications and will be used by developers as a basis for preparing detailed proposals.
