Christmas Lights on in Sunderland !!

The traditional switch on event launched Sunderland's Christmas Festival in spectacular style this year...
The city centre has been transformed into a winter wonderland as the new lighting scheme was turned on at the special event this evening at the Civic Centre on Burdon Road.

The Mayor of Sunderland, Councillor Denis Richardson, along with special guest Steve Bruce, Manager of Sunderland Football Club, switched on Sunderland's lights at 6.45pm.
Councillor Denis Wilson commented:
Sunderland will be a truly magical place this Christmas with exciting activities, events and attractions throughout the city. We are honoured that our Mayor was joined by very special guest Steve Bruce, Manager of Sunderland Football Club to switch on the city centre's new lights and launch Sunderland's Christmas Festival."

The outdoor entertainment was hosted by Simon Grundy and the Sun FM Road Show, and also featured performances by the winning schools of the 2009 City Sings competition, Castletown Primary School and St Anthony's School. There was a particularly good version of 'White Christmas' by the St Anthony's girls choir.

In addition, there was a special guest appearace from 2007 X-Factor finalist Charlie Mole !
Following tradition, the event also saw the handover of a magnificent fir tree, a gift to Sunderland from the people of Stavanger in Norway. The evening ended with a bang as a spectacular fireworks display marked the start of Sunderland's Christmas Festival.

Sunderland City Centre will be sparking with a whole new festive lighting scheme this Christmas time, as the City Council has invested in new, specially commissioned, illuminations. The new lighting will link the main transport and walking routes around the city, whilst enhancing Sunderland's green and open spaces to create an attractive ‘Wonderland'.

Sunderland's Christmas Festival is all about having fun with family and friends, enjoying traditional treats, panto, sparkly illuminations, church services, shopping and of course Santa.
The Christmas Parade is this Sunday, 22 November.
Another specal attraction is the real-ice outdoor ice rink in Mowbray Park !!
