Following the successful production last year of Barry Manilow's Copacabana, Sunderland Amateur Operatic Society (SAOS) is back with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's first collaboration, THE LIKES OF US, at the Sunderland Empire from Wednesday 20th to Saturday 23rd January 2010.
THE LIKES OF US is set on the poverty stricken streets of 1860s London and follows the heart warming tale of Dr. Thomas Barnardo whose crusade to rescue abandoned street children has become world renowned.
Dr Barnardo is a medical student bound for China when he discovers the appalling conditions of the street children of London and decides to stay in England to care for them. As a social philanthropist he is considered something of a social oddity and has to fight to win support for his cause.
With great melodies and rousing choruses, larger than life characters and tongue-in-cheek comedy, THE LIKES OF US is heart-warming and nothing short of magic.
Brian Jordan takes the lead role of Dr Barnardo, with Claire Jordan playing his wife, Syrie. Husband and wife off-stage, this is the first time that the Sunderland couple have played husband and wife on-stage too. The cast look set to win over audiences with Olivia McCourt as the kind-hearted Rose,
The musical was written by ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER and TIM RICE when they were just 17 and 21 and is considered a hidden gem, set to give audiences a warm glow.
Including the classic songs ‘Twice In Love Every Day', ‘The Likes of Us', ‘Going, Going, Gone!' and ‘Have Another Cup of Tea'
