Events Around the World in December 2009

Our summary of some of the most important days in December - but one seems to be missing !!
December 1st - the Treaty of Lisbon is expected to come into force. This agreement was signed on 13th December 2007 and was designed to change the workings of the European Union.
December 2nd - The Burj Dubai in Dubai, United Emirates will be completed. To date it is already the tallest man made structure ever built at 818m (2,684ft). Work on this building began in September 2004 and it is expected to be ready for occupancy in January 2010.
December 3rd - Christmas Tree lighting ceremony Trafalgar Square , London. Every year since 1947 the city of Oslo, Norway has donated a tree to the people of London as a token of their appreciation for Britain's support of Norway during World War II.
25th November - 6th December - National Tree Week this is the UK's largest tree celebration and marks the start of the winter tree planting season. The event is well supported by the tree council, local councils, schools and community groups. Visit the Tree Council website for more details.

Christmas Markets - markets at home and abroad held throughout December including Hyde Park, Cologne, Bath, Lille and of course the Victorian Fayre, Chipping Sodbury.

12th December - the maiden voyage of the "Oasis of the Seas" takes place. This ship is the largest passenger ship in the world carrying 5,400 passengers.
Menorah
12th December - Chanukah this is an eight day Jewish festival that commemorates the re-dedication of the holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt. This festival is also known as the "Festival of Lights". A special candelabrum know as a Menorah is lit at sundown.
21st - 22nd December - Winter Solace the shortest day of the year or the longest night.
25th December ???????????
