A further half a million live in a foreign country for part of the year, usually because they have a second home there.
Last year 198,000 Britons left the country to start new lives abroad, while 91,000 returned, a study found.
Three-quarters of Britons living abroad are based in just ten countries, the Institute for Public Policy Research said.
These are Spain, Australia, the US, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Germany and Cyprus.
Two-thirds of Britons who leave do so to look for work, while there has been a significant increase in the number of people retiring abroad.
The UK experience a total net loss of 2.7 million national between 1966 and 2005. In other words, around 67,500 more British nationals left the UK than came back to it in each of those year. (Source: Metro)
