Bulldozers to move in on ‘landmark’ toilets
| Published: 30th June 2008 21:11 |
The controversial public toilets at the centre of Kings Heath are to be closed from tomorrow.
Earlier this year the brick building at the corner of High Street and Vicarage Road was at the centre of an argument between councillors, local residents and the business association. Some wanted the block demolished - either because the toilets were claimed to attract anti-social behaviour or simply because the building was considered an eyesore blocking the creation of a new public square. Others, led by Kings Heath Business Association, wanted the toilets converted into an information centre and office for a new town centre manager.
Street equipment company JCDecaux was eventually granted temporary planning permission to knock down the toilets and replace them with a cast-iron ‘superloo'.
The work was due to start later in July but Birmingham City Council announced earlier today that the superloo had been delivered earlier than expected so the toilets would be closed from tomorrow. The replacements will open in early August, in the meantime a sign will advise local people to use the toilets at the neighbourhood offices in Silver Street.
