Kings Heath secondary school closure revealed

Published: 28th January 2010 21:02

Plans that mark the end of the line for Baverstock School in Kings Heath have been announced.

Baverstock School Kings Heath BirminghamBirmingham City Council today revealed plans for a new 1,000-place academy to cater for pupils from Baverstock Foundation School and Kings Norton High School. Both the existing schools will close when the new campus opens in September 2013.

Council land at the site of Lindsworth School on Monyhull Hall Road has been earmarked for the new development, which has been welcomed by the current Baverstock head teacher David Green.

"This is an exciting opportunity to provide the children of Druids Heath and beyond with a school fit for the 21st Century," he said

"We are particularly looking forward to sports, ICT and the arts facilities that will build on our excellence in these areas."

A working party has been set up to help plan the new school. The group is made up of local councillors, school governors, the heads of Kings Norton High and Baverstock and representatives of the local education authority.

The working party is to be chaired by city council schools boss Cllr Les Lawrence.

"I am immensely excited by this project. We have an opportunity to build a brand new, modern school to serve pupils and families in this part of the city," said Cllr Lawrence, the city council's cabinet member for young people, schools and families.

"One option for the school is for it to become an academy and we will be looking into finding suitable sponsors to work with Birmingham City Council on this," he said.

As a one time teacher ( many many years ago ) have seen both the advantages of both large and small schools. Here it does seem a wise plan and i would wish it all well.
Often said, yet not always followed through, our future does depend on what we do now, for an aging population must secure a future for our young.
