Labour MP for Birmingham Hall Green
Hall Green constituency includes Brandwood and Billesley wards. In postcode terms, that means the vast majority of B14 apart from the area around Kings Heath Park and the High Street north of Vicarage Road and Howard Road East. He's your MP too if you live in B13 south of Wheelers Lane and Brook Lane.
Steve McCabe is a Government Whip, responsible for keeping Labour MPs in line. As a Party loyalist he hardly ever rebels (according to watchdog website TheyWorkForYou.com), he hardly ever speaks in debates or asks questions - but he is pretty good at responding to issues raised by constituents. The parliamentary convention is that a Government Whip does not as a rule speak in debates - but is does mean the local MP does have the ear of some pretty senior people in the Government.
He was elected at the last General Election with a majority of 5,700 over the Conservatives. It's a healthy enough tally, but down from the 8,400 majority with which he unseated the Tory MP Andrew Hargreaves in 1997.
Steve was born in Port Glasgow, a great shipbuilding town on the River Clyde in Scotland. From studying Social Work in Scotland and Bradford in the 1970s and 1980s, Steve worked with young offenders, in child protection, and lecturing in social work at North East Worcestershire College in the late 1980s.
After working in Social Services in the area for three years, in 1990 Steve was elected to Birmingham City Council. He was soon made chairman of the transport committee and won an award in 1994 for his committee's new approach to transport management. He secured the first registration of an urban "village green".
From his background in social work, Steve maintains his work and interest in community care and children's issues. Other political interests include tackling anti-social behaviour, security issues, transport and the economy. A large part of Steve's parliamentary time, according to his own publicity, is spent on raising local issues, including crime and regeneration, with his Labour colleagues and ministers.
