Vegetables out of the box

River Nene Organic Vegetables is an Organic "vegbox" home delivery service run by Colin and Emma Atkins from Knowle, Solihull. Emma and Colin have now been delivering vegboxes more than three years to areas including Kings Heath, Moseley and the rest of B13 and B14.

We grow over 70 varieties of vegetables and fruit within our grower group of farms with the main farm based just outside of Peterborough. At the farm boxes of seasonal vegetables are packed and then delivered overnight to Colin and Emma who distribute them to customers across south Birmingham. They also deliver an assortment of extra items including: organic eggs, milk, fruit and juices to name but a few, providing all the essentials needed for a healthy balanced diet. Only when absolutely necessary do they import produce which is bought directly from growers, mainly in southern Europe and therefore travels as short a distance as possible but never by air freight.

Much has been written about whether organic food is actually better for you or not but common sense will tell you that a healthy fertile soil, free from unnecessary artificial fertilisers will result in healthier vegetables free from unwanted toxins and residues and with a greater vitamin and mineral content. Add to this the fact that most people say the food tastes better and you can't really go wrong.

So next time you are thinking about your shopping list why not indulge yourself or your family in a box from River Nene. You will be helping the small farms that work so hard to grow the produce to carry on. You will help the environment by buying food that has travelled as short a distance as possible and most of all you will be helping yourself by enjoying the freshest, healthiest veg there is.
