No. 50 bus route
| Published: 8th August 2007 15:23 |
The Number 50 is sometimes called the 'busiest bus route in Europe'.
That may or may not be true - just like the fact that Birmingham, apparently, has more canals than Venice.
What is certainly the case is that the 50 provides a fast(ish) and frequent service to and from Birmingham city centre. It is a 'showcase route', which means the city council and transport authority have spent lots of money on bus priority measures, new shelters and raised kerb 'platforms' along the route. The bus companies have put in low-floor, easy-access buses and some of them are tracked by satellite. Digital displays in the main bus shelters give 'real time' information about bus departures.
Two main companies operate the route: Travel West Midlands and Diamond Bus. They have different fare structures, but both accept the Network West Midlands passes and tickets.
