Hive of activity as volunteers take on neglected areas of Highbury Park

The neglected bees of Highbury Park will have bright new surroundings by the time they wake up from their winter doze - thanks to the efforts of a bunch of hard-working volunteers.
Friends of Highbury Park are turning their attention to some of the long-neglected areas of the former Chamberlain estate and will be suporting the beekeepers in their efforts.
Over the years Highbury's apiary has been cast in deep shade, meaning the bees have been forced to live in damp, unhealthy conditions. On Saturday 27 March volunteers will be giving the area a complete clear out.
"We want to support the beekeepers in their efforts," said a spokesperson for the Friends. "They'll be starting work on the hives in early April, so we've decided that a bit of brush clearing beforehand is the thing to do. We want to focus on the area below the apiary that's mainly laurel and bramble, and the upper part of the duck pond, where the new pipe is being laid, and around the waterfall. We also hope to have enough people to do some work maintaining the Queensbridge footpath, possibly even cutting back a bit of the ivy at the crucible wall."
Parks contractor Quadron will be supplying tools and a van and the Friends will be supplying refreshments to any willing volunteers.
