Kings Heath schools face £1/4 million axe in Government spending cuts

Two Kings Heath schools could be among the first to feel the pain of the Government's spending review due tomorrow (Wednesday).
Public sector departments across the country are bracing themselves for spending cuts of 30 per cent or more as the Coalition announces major plans to cut the national deficit.
According to reports in today's Brmingham Post, the Coalition Government will scrap the specialist sports college status as part of the measures. The status is worth around £130,000 per school.
Bishop Challoner and Baverstock are two of the Birmingham schools to have been awarded the status. It is believed the Coalition will say it wants to focus more on academic specialisms rather than sport.
Birmingham Post correspondent Jonathan Walker spoke to shadow sports minister Ian Austin:
"Parents and coaches across the country will be appalled to see the damage David Cameron is about to do to youth sport," the Midlands Labour MP told him.
"The programmes they are about to destroy aren't just about success on the pitch, in the pool or the gym or on the track, because youth sport is also the best way of keeping youngsters fit, healthy and out of trouble."
