A local man has won his first part for the acclaimed Crescent Theatre by taking the lead role in John Steinbeck's classic "Of Mice and Men".
The play is on at the theatre in Brindleyplace throughout January and February.
Moseley man, Phil Leonard, plays the role of Lenny Small, an ironically-named man of large stature and immense strength but limited mental abilities. "This is my first acting role for the Crescent Theatre", explains Phil "and what a challenging part to be playing, especially as it's such a well known piece of literature. There can't be many people who haven't come across the story in some form before."
Phil, who has recently moved to Birmingham, was in search of a new hobby after receiving a sports injury, "I've done some theatre before and jumped at the chance of auditioning.
"It's a very demanding role, Lenny has some problems that need tackling sensitively but I'm very excited at the challenge ahead."
Based on his novel with the same title, John Steinbeck's play is rightly regarded as a classic of Twentieth Century drama. Lenny relies on his smarter, smaller friend George. George looks after the retarded giant Lenny. It seems like a practical relationship. Lenny, though, doesn't know his own strength and crushes puppies when he means only to pet them - and breaks Curley's wife's neck when he means only to stroke her hair. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, this is a tense and absorbing tragedy that never fails to move its audience.
