Birmingham City Council have announced plans to close all 29 Elderly Persons Homes and Attached Day Centres. This will be phased in, between 2008 and 2010 and they will be replaced by:-
Special Care Centres for people with Dementia.
7 are proposed for the City.
Extra Care Schemes where people have their own flat with different levels of care and support.
We can only hope that our overworked Social Workers can cope with the extra workload that will occur when there are many more elderly people living back in the community needing support and care.
Independent Sector Residential Care.
These would be run in association with various charities and Housing Associations.
A move closer to relatives or an area more familiar with, alongside one of the above options.
A friend of mine cannot even get her Mother from Birmingham to a residential home in Dudley to be closer to her, as the waiting list in Dudley is too long , even for Dudley residents!
Assessments have been made of all Residential Care Homes and attached Day Centres and a schedule of closure has been put forward. The first phase of closures are due to begin in April 2008, the second phase in 2010.
These closures will also affect residents of B62 and surrounding area's who still have elderly parents and relatives living in Birmingham who need this type of invaluable care!
