Learn to Sign Week
| Published: 2nd October 2007 10:59 |
In response to the Government's recognition of British Sign Language (BSL), the British Deaf Association (BDA) is challenging everyone in the UK to learn a sign. BSL is the first or preferred language of around 70,000 Deaf people in the UK.
Children can have fun learning a new skill whilst learning about a different way of communicating. Children who want to learn to fingerspell their name and raise money for the BDA will receive a bookmark with the fingerspelling alphabet.
Did you know...
· BSL has its own grammar and vocabulary, just like any other language?
· Sign Languages are different all over the world, and even have regional dialects?
· Most British Deaf children are not allowed to be educated in BSL?
