The once in a lifetime charity auction of the infamous red beach ball that cost Liverpool FC a shock defeat to Sunderland last month raised a fantastic £411.77 for Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. The charity raised the money through an online auction on eBay that started at just £1.
The Imagine Appeal is the fundraising arm of Alder Hey Children's Hospital which treats around 250,000 children and teenagers per year.
The seven day auction attracted a staggering 33 bids as football fans tried to win the beach ball.
Senior fundraising manager of Alder Hey Imagine Appeal, Chris Done, said,
"This is far more than I was expecting... I hoped it would make around £100 so I'm pleased.
We never imagined it would raise so much!
It was fantastic to have been given the ball in the first place and the amount of publicity it has generated for us has been fantastic."
The News of the World donated the ball after they won a fierce bidding war with rival media organisations to secure the red ball which caused a fluke goal after it was thrown onto the pitch by a young fan and deflected a shot by Darren Bent.
