WALKIT.COM WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR TRANSPORT INNOVATION
A website which allows users to find the quickest walking route between any two places in Leeds city centre has scooped a national transport award.
www.walkit.com, which launched in the city in April this year, was named winner of the Most Innovative Transport Project at the National Transport Awards held in London last week.
The site aims to get people walking more in and around the city centre and provides residents and visitors with information on the distance covered, how long it takes, the number of calories which will be burnt and the amount of CO2 saved by not using a vehicle for the same journey.
It was funded in the city by Leeds City Council and Yorkshire Forward and forms part of a national network which includes London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Newcastle.
Councillor Andrew Carter, executive board member responsible for transport, said:
"Walking is often the quickest way to get from A to B in the city centre and also helps to reduce congestion and pollution while helping walkers burn off calories, keep fit and stay healthy.
"We were only too happy to help fund this project in Leeds and are pleased that the walkit.com website has won a prestigious national award in recognition of its innovative nature."
Jamie Wallace, founder of walkit.com, said: "We are delighted to have won the award - this is a fantastic achievement which underlines our belief that the site offers an inspirational and motivational way for people to find a healthier and more environmentally-friendly way of getting around town."
