Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

If you think that America is the 'land of the free', then this book will be a real eye-opener. Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee charts the merciless persecution of the Native Americans in the late nineteenth century, as migrants to America spread across the country, destroying land and massacring entire communities of natives in their hunt for gold.
It's quite dry to read and, as with any book that gives a general overview of a subject, you won't necessarily come away with an in-depth knowledge of Native American history committed to memory. However, the overall picture of a people oppressed, starved, slaughtered and tricked into giving up their land, with the few survivors forced to live on infertile reservations bereft of game, can't help but make an impression.
