Put Me Back on My Bike: In search of Tom Simpson
| Published: 10th January 2008 14:22 |
This book isn't brilliantly written, but it's a fascinating insight into the world of the Tour de France.
Tom Simpson was one of the favourites to win the 1967 Tour but died whilst ascending one of the toughest peaks. Through writing this book Fotheringham hopes to get to the bottom of the causes of his death and who, if anyone, was to blame.
You don't have to be a cycling fan to enjoy the book (I hadn't even heard of Tom Simpson until I started it!). If you enjoy any kind of sport you'll be interested in how attitudes to training, nutrition and drugs have changed over the past 40 years - Simpson, for example, was advised not to drink any water during races and to train himself to get used to dehydration...
It's worth a read, even if it's not a literary masterpiece.
