Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier

Whilst Blake is busy composing his "songs of Innocence and Experience" the characters Jem and Maggie are navigating their own destiny between the two extremes. Jem is fresh from the country village of Peddletrentide in Dorset and Maggie has grown up surrounded by the corruption and squalor rife in Lambeth.
The introduction of the nearby travelling circus and the influence of the French Revolution add glamour and drama to the mundane lives led by the main characters.
It is a tale of struggle and enlightenment and although it has a rather slow start it gathers momentum in the second half compelling the reader to continue.
Although certain events are very predictable it is nevertheless a good read.
