Andalucian Patio House

Published: 22nd July 2008 19:49

House in Vejer de la Frontera, Costa de la Luz, Spain
Carefully Restored, Typical Andalucian Patio House
Tranquil Location, Stunning Views yet only 100m from Plaza España
Sleeps 6/7 (3 Bedrooms)

At the top of a quiet, cobbled Calle Merced, Casa Angel is about 100 metres away from Plaza España - the heart of this ancient-walled, hilltop town - near enough to be aware of and join in the "fiesta life" of the town but far enough to be able to ignore it, enjoy the peaceful magnificence of the panorama and bird life from the roof terrace - and sleep well too. The oak-beamed master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with bath/shower, wc and wash basin. The other two double bedrooms access a shower wc and washbasin room between them and have their own in-room washbasins. As well as the large lounge, TV room and kitchen diner on the first floor, there is another bathroom with washbasin and wc and, at the exit to the roof terrace, is a small laundry with washing machine. The large roof terrace has an awning and range of loungers as well as a large mosaic dining table and chairs. The property is served by solar panels for the hot water and heat pumps for cooling or warming the house.

Notes on accommodation
The house was once several different dwellings on different levels, so there are many stairs. The stairway to the roof-terrace is particularly steep and narrow so great care must be taken when taking breakables to and from it. Children should not be permitted access to the roof without adult supervision. The roof terrace has a retractable awning which should always remain retracted through the night and when it is windy. All textile lounger and chair covers should be removed from roof terrace and patio furniture overnight. Plastic bags of rubbish are collected every night (except Sat.)from the corner of the top of Calle Merced. More information about Casa Angel and Vejer as a holiday venue can be found on our vejerholidayhomes website.

Accessibility
Stairs make the property difficult for those with mobility problems. Apart from dropping off and picking up your luggage outside the house on Calle Merced, it is easiest to park in the free municipal car park at the main entrance to the town. There are smaller, nearer car parks at the bottom of Merced and Manzanares - if you don't mind walking up the steep, cobbled streets to Casa Angel.

Outside
Large roof terrace (80, sq. m.) with retractable awning and roof furniture and breathtaking views over old walled part of town, limestone hills to Medina Sidonia, rice paddies, valley of the Barbate river to salt pans at its estuary, coastal margin from Barbate to Atalanterra and across the Gibraltar Straits to Tangier.

Coast/Beach
Vejer is situated on a hilltop about 6km inland from the coast and within the "white town's" municipal boundaries lies "one of Europe's best beaches" (Daily Telegraph). The 8km stretch of beach at El Palmar is Vejer's seafront. A non-shelving, safe beach of near-white sand. It is great for families - yet frequently has waves big enough to attract surfers. The coast varies considerably from flat sandy beaches, to rocky areas and cliffs. It is fun to explore and find your own favourite.

Golf
Top class golf courses at Montenmedio (3km) and Benalup (12km).

Travel
From Malaga Airport - driving time 135 mins:
Leave the airport and follow signs to N-IV signposted ALGECIRAS (this road heads south from airport). Stay on the N340 towards Algeciras & near Mijas you will join the new E5 motorway (toll) to Estepona. Stay on the N340 now bypassing Algeciras, direction CÁDIZ - climb over El Cabrito and you are now on the Costa de la Luz. Stay on the N340 passing Tarifa and wind farms. 34km after Tarifa you will see Vejer high up on a hilltop. Follow signs.

Distances
Casa Angel is situated close to the southeast corner of the town wall only 100m from Plaza España - the town's main square (actually once the bull ring). It takes only 20 minutes brisk walking to cover the cobbled streets to the town's far northwest corner. Around Plaza España, you can find everything you need for eating in: bakery, butchers, grocery; and a wonderful choice of eating out places. A flat 5 minute walk along Corredera - the town's panoramic promenade - takes you to the market.

Further details
Walking, hill walks and caves in Parque Natural de Alcornocales. La Cueva del Tajo de las Figuras just out of Benalup, on the road to Los Barrios, has guided tours of the prehistoric cave paintings there. Day trips, or longer, to Morocco (Tarifa to Tangier), Seville, Cadiz, Gibraltar, Jerez as well as many smaller interesting towns and villages. There is a good bus service if you prefer not to use the car, ask at the tourist Information for times. Gastronomy: Eating out is a major attraction here. Favourite dishes include all kinds of fresh fish, game and Moroccan cuisine. There is good food to suit all tastes. Wine: There are bodegas all over the area where you can sample local wines, the sherry of course from this area is world famous and in Jerez you can chose from to visit any of the world famous bodegas where sherry has been produced for decades. Flamenco: There are often displays of flamenco music and dance in and around Vejer; this is especially evident at the times of fiestas. We have our own Flamenco shop in the town where music and traditional dress can be purchased. Art: There are several galleries around the town displaying all types of artwork to include paintings, pottery, paper creations, basket making, handmade leather items and local crafts. We also have the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Montenmedio Golf and Country Club where art and nature combine. Spanish classes at La Janda our local language school, courses are arranged for students of all ages at all levels. History: If you are interested in history, you can see the influences of Phoenician, Roman, Visigothic and Moorish culture all around this part of Spain. Baelo Claudio at Bolonia (approximately a half hour's drive) is thought to be the best preserved coastal Roman settlement in southern Europe. Vejer was also the nearest town to the actual site of the Battle of Trafalgar.
