Chapel Allerton Village Forum

The Village Forum Meeting on Wednesday 14th November was very well represented by members of the Community and there was much lively debate about the issues on the agenda:
LOCAL POLICE UPDATE
Inspector Andrew Briggs reported that overall statistics on crime for the area were either down (house burglaries) or static (car theft) which was a very positive picture. He urged peopl to always lock their house doors to deter opportunistic thieves and to always remove radios and sat nav systems from cars to help reduce car theft.
With regards to anti-social behaviour he reported that the two main groups of people causing the trouble were being closely monitored and that good progress was being made.
CHAPEL ALLERTON PARK
Fred and Vicki gave an update on the improvements to be carried out to Chapel Allerton park to commence spring 2008 and hopefully to be completed for the summer.
Three of the tennis courts are going to be resurfaced and the fourth is going to become a multi-use games area for netball, football, cricket etc....
The fence is going to be made of suitable material so that vandals cannot ruin it.
There are also to be new parkstyle benches and new entrance gates to the park.
It was highlighted that when the Bowling Green is open members of the public can use their toilets as unfortunately there are no public toilets in the park itself.
TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENTS IN GLEDHOW VALLEY ESTATE
There is going to be a 20mph zone implemented throughout the estate which means a lot of the current signage can be removed and will improve the estate aesthetically.
Speed cushions will be replacing the current priority system.
The two mini roundabouts which cause much confusion are going to be replaced by one mini roundabout, which will give opportunity for there to be a lot more greenery instead of a vast expanse of tarmac as it is currently.
The scheme was met with great approval.
GLEDHOW VALLEY CONSERVATION AREA
Phil Ward gave an update of the "new" Convservation Area that was created on 20th Dec 2006 so is now nearly a year old and is currently being reviewed. They are hoping to extend it into Chapel Allerton Village itself to include the Yorkshire Bank site for example.
This gave rise to a heated debate about what has happened at the Yorkshire Bank sight - in particular the trees that were cut down on Monday 12th Nov.
It was agreed that everyone would really have to unite in fighting any unsuitable proposals to ensure that the sight was developed in line with the Community's wishes.
A meeting is to be arranged in the near future with the Property Developer so members of the public can put all their questions to him!
GROUNDWORK
John from Groundwork updated everyone on how the piece of land opposite "The Regent" is to be improved and developed - plans were passed around and questions were invited at the end of the meeting.
CANPLAN
Robin updated the group on what CANPLAN's aims were and advised that they were basing their plans on Armley's plans as they were deemed to be the most suitable.
The audience were encouraged to contribute any views they had about how they felt the area should be developed.
