Wrapping Up on World Asthma Day
| Published: 30th April 2012 19:03 |
On the eve of World Asthma Day, the team behind Leeds' free insulation scheme is encouraging anyone with the condition to contact them to see if their health could benefit from a wrapped up home.
The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) organise World Asthma Day each year to raise awareness about asthma and improve asthma care throughout the world.
A warmer home is just one of the factors that can help people control their asthma. Wrap Up Leeds is aiming to make 15,000 Leeds homes warmer and more energy efficient by September this year.
The scheme offers home owners and those renting privately in Leeds free loft or cavity wall insulation, subject to a survey that confirms if homes are suitable or not. Over 2,000 homes have been insulated so far.
Insulating your home and dealing with damp is recognised as one of the most effective ways of keeping warm and healthy and has been shown to improve asthma symptoms. It could also help you save £300 a year on energy bills (based figures from the Energy Saving Trust for a typical three bedroom semi-detached home).
Councillor Mark Dobson, executive member for environmental services said:
"Living in cold, damp conditions is an unfortunate reality for some. But insulating your home isn't just good for your pocket and the environment; it can have real benefits for your health too, particularly if you or someone you live with has been diagnosed with asthma.
"So if you think a cold, draughty home is making your asthma symptoms worse, do please call the team to see if we can help by insulating your house."
People can call 0800 052 0071 to apply for free cavity wall and loft insulation or apply online at www.wrapupleeds.co.uk.
The 0800 number is free from most landline providers, but may not be free from mobile networks. If you would prefer, please call Wrap Up Leeds on 01484 351 779.
