DROP-IN TO COMMENT ON PLANS FOR NEW JOINT SERVICE CENTRES
Residents in the Chapeltown and Harehills areas of Leeds are being invited to discover more about plans to open two new Joint Service Centres in their communities.
The centres - being established through a partnership between Leeds City Council, Leeds Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Leeds Local Improvement Finance Trust (LIFT) Ltd - will house existing council, health and community services in one convenient location so local people can access information and services quickly and easily.
Three drop-in events have been organised so that local people can see the plans in more detail and talk to representatives from the council, PCT and LIFT about the proposals.
The Chapeltown drop-in events takes place on Wednesday 14 May 2008 and Thursday 12 June 2008 at Space@hillcrest, Hillcrest Primary School, on Cowper Street between 4pm and 8pm.
The Harehills drop-in event will take place on Thursday 5 June at Harehills Primary School on Darfield Road, between 4pm and 8pm.
Councillor Andrew Carter, executive board member responsible for regeneration at Leeds City Council, said:
"The proposed joint service centres will allow residents in the Chapeltown and Harehills areas of the city to access a range of important services, advice and information provided by Leeds City Council, the NHS and the Leeds City Credit Union in purpose built, convenient locations.
"It is vital that local people have an input into their development and these drop-in sessions will allow residents and service users to find out more about the plans and discover just how much of a positive impact they will have on their local communities."
Jill Copeland, executive director of Strategic Development at Leeds PCT, said:
"I am absolutely delighted that we are beginning to develop the plans to build first class, convenient centres for the people of Chapeltown and Harehills.
They will transform healthcare facilities for local people and provide staff with 21st century surroundings to work in.
They will also be a focal point for local people and will benefit the community as a whole."
The proposed site for the Chapeltown centre is on Reginald Terrace and is part of Leeds City Council's wider investment and regeneration of the Chapeltown Road area. Services planned for the centre include:
- GP services relocating from Westfield Medical Centre.
- Community health services (including health visitors, pharmacy, community midwifery, Multi-Ethnic Team, contraception and sexual health (CASH) etc).
- Community dentistry (relocating from Chapeltown and Meanwood).
- Mental health and drug treatment services (for the local population).
- Leeds City Credit Union.
- Leeds City Council Customer Services.
- Leeds City Council Environmental Health Services.
- Chapeltown Library.
- Leeds City Council East North East Area Management Team.
The proposed site for the Harehills centre is on Compton Road and will include the redevelopment of the existing library. Services planned for the centre include:
- Leeds City Council Chinese Advisory Service.
- Leeds City Credit Union.
- Leeds City Council Customer Services.
- Access to mental health and drug treatment services provided by Leeds PCT (for the local population).
Planning applications are likely to be submitted at the end of June and, if given the go-ahead, the centres could open in 2010.
