YOUNG TALENT TO BREEZE THROUGH THEATRE AUDITIONS

If you're a young person with a special talent then getting it recognised in Leeds could be a real Breeze...

For young performers are going to get a chance to demonstrate what they can do on a professional stage in the brand new Breeze has Talent contest.

This is the centrepiece to this year's young people's summer activity programme in Leeds- and in what should be an exciting curtain-raiser to this year's Breeze on Tour summer programme, The Carriageworks theatre has been set aside for a special day of auditions.

Anyone under the age of 19 can enter, whether they are a singer, dancer, rapper, member of a band or even some who can break-dance while simultaneously juggling! Whatever the talent, the Breeze judges will give you a chance to show what you can do.

You need to register in advance for the audition day, which will take place on Saturday June 28 at The Carriageworks. To do so, email robert.march@leeds.gov.uk or call the Breeze office on 0113- 276 0837.

Successful acts which make it through the first phase audition will then go on to compete at this summer's big Breeze on Tour events, before a grand final with prizes in October.

Cllr Bill Hyde, lead member for Leisure, said:

"We know there are a lot of exceptional young people in Leeds and we're really looking forward to helping them showcase what they can do! So get signed up as soon as possible for your chance to prove that Breeze- and Leeds- really do have talent!"

Meanwhile, dates have been confirmed for this summer's exciting Breeze on Tour summer holiday programme of young people's events in the city. They involving a whole range of exciting outdoor activities, from art and sport to play and performance.

Each event takes place from noon-5pm. More details will be announced later, but in the meantime make a note of these dates for your diary: Thursday 24 and Friday 25 July Armley Park; Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 July Fearnville Leisure Centre playing fields; Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 August Cross Flatts Park; Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 August Scott Hall Road playing fields; Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 August Kirkstall Abbey

Mini Breeze events- like Breeze but slightly smaller- are also scheduled to take place from 1-5pm on the following dates: Monday 21 July Oak Road open space, Wortley; Tuesday 22 July Bramley Fall Woods, Leeds and Bradford Road; Monday 28 July East End Park; Tuesday 29 July Saville Park, Methley; Saturday 9 August Holbeck Gala; Monday 11 August Buslingthorpe Recreation Ground, Savile Mount; Tuesday 12 August Wetherby High School playing fields; Monday 18 August Tinshill Recreation Ground; Tuesday 19 August Meanwood Road open space.

Updates are also posted regularly on the Breeze website at www.breezeleeds.org where you can also register for a free BreezeCard if you're up to and including the age of 18.

Meanwhile, children from Leeds will be able to discover and develop their musical, literary and artistic talents as part of a national scheme which Leeds has been chosen to pilot.

A partnership spearheaded by Education Leeds and Leeds City Council is just one of ten chosen by the Government to pilot their £25 million Find Your Talent programme - a scheme which aims to give young people the chance to experience a range of high-quality arts and cultural activities for five hours a week both in and outside school.

The Leeds pilot has the support of cultural organisations around the city, including Opera North and the Royal Armouries, and will seek to bring arts and cultural experiences to all children, specifically targeting those who would normally miss out. More details will be announced over the coming months.
