Sunshine and Smiles - Leeds Down Syndrome Network

Published: 10th July 2013 11:52

Sunshine and Smiles

This support network is entirely funded by grants and donations and is run by volunteers and is part of the Leeds Short Breaks Partnership.

The group provides support to the parents, carers and families who have a child or young person with Down Syndrome in Leeds.

Current plans include physiotherapy sessions, speech and language sessions, early developmental support groups and one to one support for families with a new baby who has Down Syndrome.

In March 2010, having met at an NHS care pathway meeting, three parents who have children with Down Syndrome realised that there wasn't a specific support network for families who have a child or young person with Down Syndrome in Leeds and they decided that it would be great if they could set something up to offer advice, support, activities and friendship for children and their families.

Initially they set up a Facebook group and got in touch with other parents. They then developed a small committee and started to look around for a suitable venue to run some group sessions.

They started running their first group sessions in September 2011 and now meet at Stainbeck Community Hall every other Monday and on monthly Saturday afternoons.

Sunshine and Smiles have activities for children; musical instruments, tactile play, water play, painting, singing and signing... siblings are welcome too! And they have regular guest speakers.

Tea, coffee, juice and other refreshments are also available.

Other activities include: picnics and play at local parks, trips out to the Donkey Sanctuary, Sensory Leeds and Soft Play Centres.

There is no other specific support group or network in Leeds for children and young people with Down Syndrome and their families.
