Somerset County Council have announced that national newspapers are to once again be made available in many of the county's libraries with immediate affect.
National newspapers put into place
in several libraries
The decision to reverse the withdrawal of national newspapers from several libraries, which was put into place only last month, has been made possible after £13,000 of savings were created when County Councillors agreed to scrap free meals for themselves at County Hall.
The reinstatement of national newspapers in several libraries across Somerset costs taxpayers £10,000 per year. The additional £3,000 of savings, created by ending free lunches for County Councillors, will be ploughed back into front line services.
Commenting on the decision, Cllr Christine Lawrence, Somerset County Council's Cabinet Member for Community said,
"It was clear that the decision to withdraw national newspapers from several libraries was an unpopular decision. After examining the situation we have been able to find a cost saving with regards to ending free members lunches. I am confident that the public will welcome this decision as evidence of this council's determination to put front line services and not members expenses at the forefront of everything we do."
