Tom Mitchell at The Processed Pea
Tom Mitchell's father Billy fronted Tyneside bands Jack the Lad, Lindisfarne and was one half of Maxie & Mitch. At an early age Tom decided to make his own mark on the music scene and since the age of twelve has fronted bands as guitarist, piano player and lead vocalist. He was invited to join BBC Radio 2 Folk award finalists Tarras for their final tour of major venues, before leaving to perform his own solo shows (as well as with The Billy Mitchell Band) which included a slot at the 2010 Newcastle City Hall ‘Sunday for Sammy' show playing alongside Mark Knopfler.
His live performances are a balanced combination of original material and songs from his favourite contemporary writers. His recent CD ‘Paper Thin Walls' included tracks written by John Martyn, Bruce Springsteen and Loudon Wainwright III, demonstrating a mature taste despite only being in his twenties. "These are the songs I grew up with" says north-east-based Tom, "My brothers and sister are musical too so there were often family ‘get togethers' playing Beatles songs or Crowded House or whatever- sometimes ending up with neighbours banging on the walls in the early hours!"
Processed Pea organiser Stuart Bell explained: "It's a fact that Tom's father Billy is one of the most popular musicians ever to appear at the venue - but Tom is definitely here on his own merits. It's great to be able present young talent at the best of times, and just a huge bonus when it's someone we've known about since he was born!"
