Work has started on the exciting new facility for children and young people at the Millennium Playpark. The building has been installed and the playpark is currently being refurbished. This is a large scale project, investing £700,000 for play in Withernsea. Additional funds have been set aside to fully restore the natural features at the site, once the works are complete.
Partner organisations are working hard to complete the necessary legal agreements for the project. This will enable the final phase to be built: a fenced "adventurous" space next to the building where young people can get involved in building play structures and other creative projects. The recent "self-build" course was a huge success, with expert advice on how to build creative adventure playground structures to the industry standards.
Councillor Jane Evison, porfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection, said: "Play is a really important part of children's development and the new Millennium Playpark in Withernsea, which has been made possible with the help of Lottery Funding, is another important addition to the council's programme of new and refurbished play areas across the East Riding.
"I do urge people to get involved in the project and let us know what they think as local ownership and pride in the new play park will be a key to its success."
The building and playpark will be open for children to play from 31st March. Sessions at the adventure playground will be free of charge to all children aged five to 16 and will be "open access" i.e. children will be free to come and go. Parents will be welcome to stay. The adventure playground will be open after school Mondays to Fridays (3.45 to 6.30 p.m.), Saturday afternoons (1.00 - 5.00 p.m.) and at various times during the school holidays.
If you would like to find out more about the project, there will be an open coffee morning at the Pavilion Leisure Centre on Thursday, 25 March from 10am to 12 noon.
