New And Acclaimed Novelists To Attend East Riding Readers' Day

East Riding Readers' Day will this year take place on Saturday, 22 May (10am - 4pm) at Longcroft School, Beverley (upper school site).

Now in its tenth year, the East Riding Readers' Day has become one of the most popular events in the Yorkshire literary calendar. Based on a mix of readers' group sessions with authors, panel discussions and great conversation about literary classics, it never fails to leave participants renewed in their love for literature.

As it gets harder for top-quality, but lesser known writers to develop their readerships, the readers' day programme offers the opportunity for new and early career writers to present their work to readers alongside more established writers.

Sarah Hall, who has been short-listed for the Man Booker Prize and has won the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best First Novel, will be joined by debut novelist Sarah Rayner, and by crime writer Jim Creed and the acclaimed Joe Treasure. The mix of writing styles and subjects is designed to provide something for everyone.

John W. Clarke, literature officer for East Riding Libraries and organiser of the day, said: "Given the diminishing, general availability of books by good authors without a track-record or media profile, we believe that it's our duty to celebrate the diversity of writing that goes on off the radar of all but the biggest book stores. This year we're delighted that Sarah Hall will be joined by three substantial novelists relatively early on in their journey as novelists."

On signing up, participants receive a book by their chosen author well in advance of the day giving them plenty of time to enjoy the book and think through what they'd like to discuss. There's always delicious food for lunch from Roberts and Speight and plenty of food for the mind in the form of book recommendations - in fact it's the kind of day that could turn your reading life upside down!
