Geocaching in Hornsea & Beyond!

(My nephew and his first find)
So the long awaited Summer hols are here, the kids have broken up from school - but look what's happened again. Six weeks is a long time, and they've ran out of things to do! If that's the case then fear not, i introduce you to geocaching, (if you haven't already heard of it that is!)
My brother recently introduced me to this through an iPhone App. The best and easiest way to describe what 'geocaching' is, is a big game of hide and seek, a worldwide treasure hunt! It's an outdoor activity in which you use a GPS reciever, (such as an iPhone) to hide and seek small treasures, though i believe 'caches' is the proper term!
When i say worldwide, i really do mean worldwide! The hunt has been going on for over ten years, with hiders and seekers in over 100 countries, on every continent!
The 'cache' or treasure, is usually something like a small tuppa wear box or something of the sort, this will usually contain a logbook (which you sign to say you've found it) and 'swappables'. People will leave behind things like small tar coys or car air fresheners which you can simply swap for something else - it's really good fun, and definately something worth trying out.
If you have an iPhone you can get started by simply searching 'GEOCACHING' in the iPhone app store. The introduction is free of charge, however this only shows you the three geocaches nearest to you, to view all Caches near you you'd need to download the full version for around £5, or you could just use the website -

You'll be suprised how many people near you take part, there's often treasure to be found just around the corner!
