Cara Dillon scoops Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Album
Irish folk singer Cara Dillon, who will be performing at Northampton's Royal & Derngate in March, has scooped the coveted Best Album prize in the recent BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

One of the most original and stunning singers of traditional music, Cara carried off the award for Best Album for her 2009 release Hill of Thieves as well as being nominated in the Folk Singer of the Year and Best Original Song categories.
Cara is no stranger to awards, having won the All Ireland Singing Trophy at the age of 14 before going on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and Equation, where she met husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. Whether she's singing her native songs of lost love and emigration, or original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer.
Royal & Derngate's Programmer Steve Scrivens commented: "We're delighted that Cara is receiving the recognition she so rightly deserves and look forward to her performance here in Northampton. We're striving to bring the best of the contemporary music scene to Royal & Derngate, including many artists who have been nominated for or have won prestigious music awards." Mercury Award nominees Seth Lakeman and Portico Quartet will both be performing at the Northampton venue in March and Radio 2 Folk Award nominees from 2008, The Imagined Village, received a rapturous reception at their recent gig, with a line up including the winner of last year's Radio 2 Folk Award album of the year Chris Wood. And if anyone missed pianist Zoe Rahman (Mercury nominee 2006) when she was performed with Soothsayers in January, there's another chance to hear her when she returns to Royal & Derngate with the Jerry Dammers AKA Spatial Orchestra in April.
Cara Dillon will be taking to the Royal stage on Friday 26 March, and the gig is providing an opportunity for talented local singer/songwriter Corinne Lucy to showcase her talents as support act. The show starts at 7.45pm and tickets, priced £17.50 and £15, can be booked by calling the Box Office on 01604 624811 or on www.royalandderngate.co.uk.
