The benefit of strong links with parish and town councils was emphasised at a workshop on tackling crime and safety issues in the west of Northamptonshire.

On Thursday, 2 February 2017 members of the Daventry District and South Northants Community Safety Partnership (CSP) came together to discuss community safety needs and priorities and how they can support the Northants Police Crime Commissioner’s county wide crime action plan.

The workshop was organised by South Northants Council (SNC) and took place at The Forum in Towcester.

Cllr Karen Cooper, SNC’s portfolio holder for community engagement and wellbeing said: “The Chamber was filled with delegates from Northants Police, Northants Fire, the County Council, Daventry District Council, Highways, Women’s Aid, several housing associations and representatives from SNC.

“The delegates were divided into six groups and discussed six topics in a speed dating style workshop.

“One of the key themes was the value of parish councils and rural residents as a potential source of information and it became apparent to everyone we had to engage with them and raise awareness of how they can contribute to initiatives designed to keep us all safer.”

Topics discussed were safer roads, anti-social behaviour, rural crime, domestic abuse, child sexual exploitation, and Prevent;, part of the Government’s strategy to tackle extremism and terrorism.

All information captured during the workshop will be collated, reviewed and will formulate the draft plan to be presented to the CSP Board.
